Functioning of Catfish Electroreceptors: Bursting Discharge Pattern of Kr Yptopterus Electroreceptors Elicited by Microelectrode Impalement
نویسندگان
چکیده
l. The time course of the spontaneous discharge of Kryptopterus ampullary electroreceptors may change from regular to bursting upon impalement by a glass microelectrode. 2. The burst duration is very constant relative to the interburst interval, during spontaneous fluctuations as well as in response to low-frequency stimulation. 3. Implications for the current model of the functioning of catfish electroreceptors are discussed.

Simple models of bursting and non-bursting P-type electroreceptors
Weakly electric "sh use phase and amplitude modulations of their electric organ discharge to communicate and to capture prey (electrolocation). P-type electroreceptors, also known as probability coders, on their skin can detect extremely weak signals. We analyse baseline "ring characteristics of these receptors from experimental data, and present mathematical models for the "ring activity of bo...
متن کاملSpike-Interval Triggered Averaging Reveals a Quasi-Periodic Spiking Alternative for Stochastic Resonance in Catfish Electroreceptors
Catfish detect and identify invisible prey by sensing their ultra-weak electric fields with electroreceptors. Any neuron that deals with small-amplitude input has to overcome sensitivity limitations arising from inherent threshold non-linearities in spike-generation mechanisms. Many sensory cells solve this issue with stochastic resonance, in which a moderate amount of intrinsic noise causes ir...
متن کاملSensory coding and corollary discharge effects in mormyrid electric fish.
Weakly electric fish use their electrosensory systems for electrocommunication, active electrolocation and low-frequency passive electrolocation. In electric fish of the family Mormyridae, these three purposes are mediated by separate classes of electroreceptors: electrocommunication by Knollenorgan electroreceptors, active electrolocation by Mormyromast electroreceptors and low-frequency passi...
متن کاملThe mormyromast region of the mormyrid electrosensory lobe. I. Responses to corollary discharge and electrosensory stimuli.
This is the first of two papers on the electrosensory lobe (ELL) of mormyrid electric fish. The ELL is the first stage in the central processing of electrosensory information from electroreceptors. Cells of the mormyrid ELL are affected at the time of the electric organ discharge (EOD) by two different inputs, EOD-evoked reafferent input from electroreceptors and corollary discharge input assoc...
متن کاملThe medullary pacemaker nucleus is unnecessary for electroreceptor tuning plasticity in Sternopygus.
Tuberous electroreceptors of the weakly electric fish Sternopygus macrurus are closely tuned to the frequency of electric organ discharge (EOD), which is determined by a medullary pacemaker nucleus (PMN). Previous studies have demonstrated that androgens lower the frequency of PMN discharge and concomitantly lower the best frequencies (BFs) of electroreceptors. In order to determine if the PMN ...
